Psychotherapy

When is psychotherapy the right step?
There is no fixed moment for this. Often it is the point when an issue will not let you go, and conversations with friends or family reach their limits. People come to us with anxiety or sleep issues, with persistent stress, or with questions about their self-worth.
You can register yourself by email, through our web form or by phone, or your GP practice can refer you. Whatever you send us by email or through the web form goes to a HIN-protected Medikon address. We will then get in touch to arrange your first appointment with you.
I do not have a referral order. How do I begin?
You can start with an appointment with our psychiatrists. For health insurance to cover sessions with psychological psychotherapists, a medical referral order is required, which is why the process begins with a medical assessment. In the first consultation, you outline your situation. If psychotherapy is medically indicated, you will receive the referral order, and therapy will continue in-house with our psychotherapists.
Usually, the referral order comes from your GP practice or another medical specialist. Please feel free to ask there first. If you are insured under a GP model, please also include a referral from your GP practice for the psychiatry appointment so that your health insurance covers the costs.
With a referral order, we bill through basic health insurance; deductible and co-payment apply as usual. If you pay for the therapy yourself, you do not need a referral order.
How does therapy work at Medikon?
It begins with an initial consultation. You explain what is on your mind and clarify with your specialist where you stand and what you wish to achieve. From this, a plan for your therapy is formed, and you help shape it.
Afterwards, you meet for regular sessions. How often is something you decide together, depending on your needs and what fits into your day-to-day life. If you cannot attend in person, the session can also take place by video by prior arrangement.
Who provides medical support for me?
At Medikon, psychiatry and psychotherapy collaborate on treatments where both perspectives are valuable. Everything discussed is subject to medical confidentiality.
When medication or incapacity for work is involved, both professions coordinate closely; the medical assessment remains the responsibility of psychiatry. Prescriptions are also issued there.
