Crisis intervention

When is crisis intervention appropriate?
When an event or ongoing strain overwhelms you to the point that daily life is difficult to manage. This might be following a separation, a bereavement, or when pressure has accumulated at work and at home. You do not need a formal diagnosis.
Crisis intervention is intended for exceptional circumstances where there is no acute danger. We accompany you through scheduled appointments, calmly and without rush. If you do not feel safe right now, or if someone is in acute danger, please dial 144. On our emergency page, you will find further telephone numbers available around the clock, including those of the psychiatric emergency services in Zürich, Luzern, and Bern.
What can I expect during the sessions?
To begin with, you share what is weighing on you most at present and how this came about. The person speaking with you, whether a medical doctor or a psychotherapist, listens carefully and explores with you until a clear picture forms of how you are feeling and what has supported you so far.
In subsequent consultations, the initial focus is on stability. You discuss what can relieve pressure now and how to structure the days ahead. Later, you and your specialist put what you are experiencing into context and consider whether ongoing treatment would be appropriate.
Crisis intervention is time-limited. The number of sessions required depends on your situation and is agreed with you as things progress. Consultations can take place in person or via video call. You decide together with your specialist which format suits you best.
What if the crisis lasts longer?
For some crises, a few sessions are sufficient. Others reveal that underlying difficulties have been building up for a longer time. Which of these applies often becomes clear only over time, and your specialist will discuss this openly with you.
If more time is required, crisis intervention can transition into ongoing treatment. Our specialist doctors can carry out an in-depth assessment and provide a diagnosis. In psychotherapy, you have a consistent, supportive setting over a longer period to explore the factors that triggered the crisis.
You remain with Medikon for this care. Your specialist coordinates the transition directly with the colleagues who will continue your treatment.
